Membrane material selectively permeable to water vapor are an exellent medium for producing dry air from standard compressed air.  As the compressed air travels along the length of the membrane, water vapor diffuses through the membrane, producing clean, dry compressed air at the oulet.  A small fraction of the dry air is then directed along the outside surface of the membrane to "sweep" the moisture-laden air away from the membrane and it is then vented to the atmosphere.  The remaining clean, dry air is supplied to the application. 

Balston Air Dryers for Coordinate Measurement Machines (CMM) combine superior coalescing technology with a proven, innovative membrane system to supply clean, dry compressed air with a constant dewpoint to 35°F (2°C). Balston CMM Air Dryers are available in two different models which can deliver dry, compressed air at flow rates up to 15 SCFM (25.5 Nm3/Hr).
