Nitrogen is used in a variety of applications across many different markets including food and beverage, chemical processing, oil and gas, power generation, metal processing, mining, and transporation. Typical applications for nitrogen include:
Food Packaging
      The   benefits for using nitrogen for packaging are well known.  Residual   oxygen within a package promotes bacterial growth which can compromise   product quality and shelf life.  Using nitrogen minimizes the levels of   oxygen present, preserving qualtiy and significantly improving shelf   life. 
Blanketing
      Many   industries use a wide variety of dangerous chemicals in the manufacture   of products.  Blanketing with an inert gas, such as nitrogen, is often   used to ensure the chemical integrity and maximize safety.  Nitrogen   tank blanketing controls the oxygen concentration and humidity within   the vessel, protecting the product from contamination, degradation, and   chemical change thus minimizing the chance of explosion.  A nitrogen   blanket can also be used to balance tank volumes and prevent collapse   during unloading.
Degassing Aluminum
      Using   nitrogen to degas aluminum during the extrusion process removes oxygen   and assists the die cooling, which improves consistency, yields less   scrap, and produces high quality product.
Boiler Layup
      Boiler   cycling (startup and shutdown) is more common in today's challenging   business environment, primarily due to instability of natural gas prices   and volatile energy demand.  Proper layup of the heat recovery steam   generator (HRSG) is critical.  Problems associated with improper boiler   layup include corrosion and pitting on both the gas and water sides of   the HRSG, maintenance issues, startup delays, and water chemistry   delays.  Nitrogen is an essential tool in helping to alleviate these   issues and has become the preferred technology. 
Prevention of Flares Gas Blowback and Pipe Flushing
      Natural   gas flares are suject to blowback.  A nitrogen blanket to the flame   prevents this dangerous condition.  Nitrogen can also be used to fluch   pipes that are used to transport flammable gases. 
Mine Inerting
      The   primary uses for nitrogen in the mining industry are extinguishing coal   mine fires or more recently to inert abandoned areas of mines.    Reducing oxygen content of the combustive gases below the lower limit of   explosion is an effective method to extinguish coal mine fires.
Enhanced Oil Recovery
        After   oil and gas wells are drilled, completed, and placed into primary   production only about 12 to 15% of the original oil in place is   recovered because of the continually deleting drive pressure of the   well.  Gas injection using either carbon dioxide or nitrogen increase   the reservoir pressure to promote additional recovery.
        
        Mechanical Gas Seals
        To   reduce the volume of gases containing volatile organic compounds   leaking into the atmosphere, environmental agencies have instituted   regulations limiting VOC emissions.  Many large pumps or compressors   contain mechanical gas seals which isolate compressed gases containing   VOCs from leaking to atmosphere.  The lubricating gas normally used to   pressurize the seal is natural gas.  A safer alternative is dry, inert   nitrogen.
Injection Molding
      Injection   molding is a common process for producing parts from thermoplastic feed   materials.  Oxygen and moisture can cause significant problems with the   final product.  Using nitrogen in the process can result in better   product quality, lower scrap, decreased material usage, and maximixed   uptime.
